SierrAzul’s privileged location in the center of 3 major natural reserves in Ecuador (Cayambe-Coca, Antisana Sumaco) has become an immensely biodiverse ecosystem and of particular importance for the reproduction of Andean flora and fauna species.
Large rubber trees (Sapium sp) are abundant in our forest and gave origin to the general name for the area, known as "The Caucheras."
Alder is another important species in the area. Native tree of the valleys and foothills whose wood has been coveted for centuries for the manufacture of wooden tools thanks to its resistance to water.
The Dragon’s bloodtree (Croton sp), presents an important medicinal characteristic: its latex which is widely used by Amazon natives for external wound healing and stomach ulcers.
The carcarilla has been of vital importance to treat malaria as it contains quinine, an
alkaloid that forms the basis of malaria medicine.
In addition, quinidine is extracted from its bark and used in the treatment of heart
diseases.
Special mention must be given to the orchids, of which SierrAzul alone has more than
250 species ranging from microscopic to huge fragrant inflorescences. |
